Psychological First Aid (PFA) training manual

Introduction

This training manual provides a structured framework for delivering Psychological First Aid (PFA), an evidence-informed approach designed to reduce initial distress and promote adaptive coping in the immediate aftermath of a crisis.

I. Introduction: What is PFA?

PFA is the mental health equivalent of physical first aid. It is a humane, supportive response to a fellow human being who is suffering and may need support.

  • Timing: PFA is most effective in the “hot” phase—immediately following or during a crisis.
  • Who Can Provide It: You do not need a clinical license; any trained member of the community, including volunteers, teachers, and first responders, can provide PFA.
  • What It Is NOT: It is not therapy, professional counseling, or a clinical diagnosis.
