You lose a client. Performing very poorly during a job interview. A relationship ends.
None of these things, on their own, can make you feel anything. That sounds strange, because it doesn’t feel true in the moment. But the raw event — the lost client, the awkward interview, the breakup — is neutral. It’s just something that happened. What actually determines how you feel next is the sentence you write in your head about it.
“I lost the client because the timing was bad.”
versus
“I lost the client because I’m bad at this.”
Same event. Two completely different emotional futures.
This idea isn’t new — the Stoic philosopher Epictetus said something close to it two thousand years ago: people aren’t disturbed by things, but by the opinions they hold about things. What’s changed is that modern psychology has taken that insight out of philosophy class and turned it into something you can actually work with.

How your brain turns an event into a feeling
Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman spent years studying how people process stress, and they found it happens in two steps. First, your mind sizes up what just happened — is this a threat, a loss, or a challenge? Then it asks a second question: do I have what it takes to handle this?
The answers to those two questions, not the event itself, decide what happens in your body next. Label something a catastrophe, and your nervous system braces for a fight — stress hormones flood in, your focus narrows, your body treats the situation like an emergency. Label the exact same event a challenge, and something different happens: you lean in, get curious, start looking for a way through. Research bears this out — the way people appraise a situation tends to predict their long-term health better than how objectively bad the situation actually was.
From “I failed” to “I am a failure”
Here’s where it gets more specific — and more personal. Psychologists Aaron Beck and David Burns, two of the founders of cognitive therapy, identified a particular mental sleight of hand they called labeling. It’s the quiet swap from describing what you did to declaring who you are.
“I failed” is a sentence about an event. It happened, it’s over, it tells you something you can act on.
“I am a failure” is a sentence about your identity. It doesn’t end. It doesn’t point anywhere useful. It just sits there, verdict delivered.
Martin Seligman, who spent his career studying why some people crumble under setbacks while others bounce back, found that this kind of self-talk tends to follow a pattern. People who struggle most describe their setbacks as permanent (“this will never change”), pervasive (“this ruins everything”), and personal (“this is entirely my fault”). Stack those three together often enough, and you get what researchers have called a “why try” effect — a kind of learned passivity where people stop attempting things they might actually be capable of, simply because the label got there first.
And it tends to become self-fulfilling. Once you’ve decided you’re “the disorganized one” or “the person who always gets left,” you start acting in ways — often without noticing — that produce more evidence for the label. The story writes the next chapter of itself.

The right-hand column isn’t sugarcoating. It’s just more accurate. A verdict closes the case. An observation leaves room to act.
Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a thought and a fact
This isn’t just a mood trick — it shows up in the brain itself. Neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman and colleagues found that simply putting a feeling into accurate words — “I’m feeling anxious,” rather than spiraling wordlessly — activates a region of the prefrontal cortex that helps quiet down the amygdala, the brain’s alarm system. Naming a feeling accurately doesn’t make it disappear, but it does turn the volume down.
There’s a deeper reason for this. Newer models of how the brain works describe it less like a camera recording the world and more like a prediction machine, constantly guessing what’s coming next and adjusting itself to match. A label like “I am a failure” isn’t just a description — it’s an instruction. It tells your brain what to expect and, quietly, what to look for. The label doesn’t just reflect your reality. It starts to build it.
So what do you actually do with this?
Three approaches, each backed by real research and each surprisingly usable:
Reappraisal. Simply ask, “what’s another way to read this?” It sounds almost too simple, but the practice of generating alternative interpretations of an event is one of the most well-supported tools in cognitive therapy for reducing distress over time.
Defusion. Instead of fighting a harsh thought, put a little distance around it. Say “I’m having the thought that I’m a failure” instead of “I am a failure.” It’s a small grammatical shift, borrowed from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, but it turns a verdict back into just a thought — one of many you’ll have today, most of which you won’t remember by dinner.
Rewriting the narrative. People who grow through hard experiences — genuinely grow, not just recover — tend to be the ones who eventually retell the story differently. Not “this ruined me,” but “this changed what I care about.” The event stays real. The meaning shifts.
The bottom line
You don’t get to choose most of what happens to you. But you do get to choose the sentence that comes after it. That sentence — not the event — is usually what determines how the next chapter goes.
The event is not the verdict. You are still writing the verdict, one label at a time.
