None of these things, on their own, can make you feel anything. That sounds strange, because it doesn’t feel true in the moment. But the raw event โ€” the lost client, the awkward interview, the breakup โ€” is neutral. It’s just something that happened. What actually determines how you feel next is the sentence you write in your head about it.

“I lost the client because the timing was bad.”

Same event. Two completely different emotional futures.

This idea isn’t new โ€” the Stoic philosopher Epictetus said something close to it two thousand years ago: people aren’t disturbed by things, but by the opinions they hold about things. What’s changed is that modern psychology has taken that insight out of philosophy class and turned it into something you can actually work with.

How your brain turns an event into a feeling

Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman spent years studying how people process stress, and they found it happens in two steps. First, your mind sizes up what just happened โ€” is this a threat, a loss, or a challenge? Then it asks a second question: do I have what it takes to handle this?
