You lose a client. Performing very poorly during a job interview. A relationship ends.

None of these things, on their own, can make you feel anything. That sounds strange, because it doesn’t feel true in the moment. But the raw event โ€” the lost client, the awkward interview, the breakup โ€” is neutral. It’s just something that happened. What actually determines how you feel next is the sentence you write in your head about it.

“I lost the client because the timing was bad.”

versus

“I lost the client because I’m bad at this.”

Same event. Two completely different emotional futures.

This idea isn’t new โ€” the Stoic philosopher Epictetus said something close to it two thousand years ago: people aren’t disturbed by things, but by the opinions they hold about things. What’s changed is that modern psychology has taken that insight out of philosophy class and turned it into something you can actually work with.

How your brain turns an event into a feeling

Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman spent years studying how people process stress, and they found it happens in two steps. First, your mind sizes up what just happened โ€” is this a threat, a loss, or a challenge? Then it asks a second question: do I have what it takes to handle this?

Put simply: Appropriate Thinking isn’t about forcing yourself to feel good. It’s about seeing clearly โ€” and then acting well on what you see.

Why Your Brain Defaults to Bias

There’s a real biological reason both biases are so hard to shake.

  • Negativity bias runs largely through the amygdala, which reacts to threat cues almost instantly โ€” often before your conscious mind even catches up. Fast, automatic, built for survival.
  • Positivity bias runs through the brain’s reward system (structures like the ventral tegmental area and nucleus accumbens), which lights up in anticipation of a payoff and quietly discounts the risk involved in getting there.

Appropriate Thinking, on the other hand, depends on the prefrontal cortex โ€” specifically regions involved in self-monitoring and emotional regulation.
